UGA Hotline Reports [3]

Tonight’s show follows Georgia’s 45-17 win over Ole Miss. The key game in Knoxville this coming Saturday looms. Also, the Vandy game on Oct. 13 will be on ESPN2 (6:00 ET kickoff).

Munson opened tonight noting that major college football shuddered this past weekend, then recounted the top 15 teams that lost. One of the unbeaten teams still left is that bunch up at Kentucky [4]. Also, Southern Cal barely remained unbeaten.

Jeremy in Memphis was first up as Munson went right to phone calls. He complemented Brian Mimbs on doing a great job punting. Have we forgotten about the FB? Also, what about the DL since we got pushed around by Ole Miss? Richt wasn’t surprised Jeremy was the first call. We have tried to get the ball to Southerland.. There are some plays for him but sometimes the protection broke down – the first play after the onsides kick, for instance.

No question we need more pressure from the DL. It could come from inside or outside. When the DEs force the QB in, we want the interior guys to push the pocket back so he has no room to step up. CMR thinks it is doubtful we go after any JUCOs. We have enough guys there and they are developing, though still young.

Scott in Grayson wondered if CMR had a copy of the AJC from the day after we got routed by Tenn. last year (the headline “Dawgs Put In Their Place”). Scott would mail it but CMR said he could get it. CMR added the coaches had talked about extra motivational things for this week.

Scott also thinks Tripp Chandler was treated totally inappropriately by a small percentage .. and Scott was concerned about Tripp’s quote in the paper about it. Scott hopes the guys know at least 99% of the fans are with them win, lose or draw. Richt appreciated Scott’s comments and wish the fans wouldn’t boo, but understands it was a knee jerk reaction. It does not help recruiting Parents hear that and don’t appreciate it.

Murray in Rex echoed Scott’s comments about booing, and the players’ reaction. Fans sacrifice a lot to get to the games and cheer for the team too. CMR said he could assure us Tripp’s comment was just an emotional reaction and having a microphone getting stuck in their face. The guys know that without the fans the game almost wouldn’t be worth playing.

Kevin in Walhalla, SC (near the state line and near Clemson [5]) notices a lot of teams are putting an RB in the QB position in the red zone. CMR says everyone notices the field shrinks and no one has to play the deep ball. The safeties come up. If the QB is a runner that’s an extra man you have to account for. In some ways it’s good but in some it’s predictable. But it does help with the numbers.

Stan in Athens has been following UGA since the Hearst era, and was really pleased with how we ran the ball. CMR said we ran it more because of our RBs (laughs). There were times we blocked well up front but times we didn’t. We blessed to have those guys, and Lumpkin isn’t far away from re-joining the group.

Steven in Rome wished Munson a belated Happy Birthday. He asked about Cox getting in late in the game. For his development, it may help for him to throw the ball more than just the one time. CMR thinks if the second team QB comes in and throws it there wouldn’t be any harm. But when the moment of truth comes who knows ..

Most of these teams we’ll play again. People collect stuff from previous years. (Scott, the earlier caller, is a good example – having saved the paper from getting blown out by Tenn. last year.)

Jody in Turnersville wonders why we can beat SC and Tenn., but not Florida [6]? Also, does Richt ever talk to Goff or Donnan? Richt didn’t think he would have to answer a Florida question yet. CMR said he talked to both of them within five minutes on Friday. He saw Goff at the Prince Avenue Christian game, then he was recording something with Donnan for a show on Saturday.

(Some chat posters thought that call was a “prank”…)

Joe (talking over crying baby) had some question about the offense being able to answer opponents’ scores the last two weeks, turning momentum around. CMR agreed, but added we didn’t take advantage of opportunities vs. SC. Otherwise the offense has done a good job of scoring when we needed to. A lot of that has to do with Stafford’s maturity and Bobo keeping his poise with play calling.

Paul in Centre, AL notices it seems like lots of teams are throwing screen passes, then throw one downfield, then won’t do it the rest of the game. CMR laughed and said he was trying to get Bobo to launch it downfield more often. We throw the screens because they’re very high percentage passes, you get nice 6-8 yard gains and can move the chains. The deep ball – it’s hard to get in second and long and still move the chains. It’s the risk of forcing yourself into long yardage situations. CMR likes it because it serves notice to the defense.

Ashley in Waycross wants an injury update. CMR: K. Johnson should be fine. He will go in non-contact tomorrow and should be OK. Haverkamp – still questionable. M. Washington – very questionable. Lumpkin is starting to try to work without that club on his hand and see if he can handle the ball. In practice, Lump has been able to catch ball he could cradle in. But anything he had to reach out and snatch he has dropped.

Alan asks about our road success, and wants CMR to take T. Brown off the kick coverage team. CMR said Brown is more of a safety on that team. He doesn’t have to overexert himself. He lags behind in case someone breaks out. About road success – CMR doesn’t really know but thinks it has to do with the QB. The player who has to deal with crowd noise the most is the QB. Greene, Shockley and now Stafford have good poise under pressure. The OL is the next group that has to deal with it. And our staff doesn’t overreact and panic. We just keep our composure and put guys in position to win.

Nash in Augusta wonders about that timeout in the Auburn-Florida game. CMR thinks coaches being able to call timeouts is good if you have young QBs. As for Meyer, when he called it strategically it looked good since he made it. But what if the kid had missed it and then made the second after the timeout? That could have backfired.

Fred in Baxley asked about rushing yards – CMR thinks we had two over 100 yards once since he’s been here. Brown looked good today – not even sore. Richt thought he would at least be sore but that was not the case. The coaches won’t even have Brown in a green jersey tomorrow.

Kevin in Vidalia thanked CMR for allowing Michael Pittman to get in a few plays with the regular defense. What film have we looked at to get ready for this game? What about using the pass to set up the run? And please close practice this week.

CMR said we’ve looked at our game last year, all their games this year, and maybe go back. We watch film until our eyes bleed – maybe too much. As for throwing short routes, that will be in the plan and be dictated by what they’re doing. Try to do the right thing at the right time. This caller wanted to throw the short passes and another wants to throw the bombs. We’ll try to do a little of everything.

Jerry in Blackshear thinks fans need to let stuff like the Chandler comment needs to roll off our backs. CMR agrees and thinks people tend to react when they think they’re getting attacked. The OL, as young as it is, is doing a heck of a job.

Jerome in Cordele asked if we’d done extra work with Chandler – his hands seemed better this game than last game. CMR – Tripp has always caught the ball. He caught the ball well when he camped here, which is why we took him. He’s been very sure handed since he has been here. Every so often a guy will make a mistake and get the yips but he’ll grow out of it.

Michael in Dewey Road – was the Stafford penalty for not handing the ball to the ref? What about the state patrolman – he’s an Ole Miss grad. Stafford doesn’t have to hand the ball to the ref. He dropped the ball and “punted” it about five feet or so, out of frustration, where the official had to go get it.

Munson noted our WRs are blocking extremely well. CMR pointed out that has a lot to do with why we’re getting more long runs this year.
