Bulldog News [3]

From GeorgiaDogs.com: [4] ATHENS, Ga. --- Opening Day at Foley Field is almost here as Georgia enters its final weekend of intra-squad scrimmages before the first pitch against top-ranked Arizona.

The Bulldogs will scrimmage at 5 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 12:30 p.m. Sunday, which are the same times as the opening series against the Wildcats Feb. 22-24. On Friday, six Bulldog pitchers are slated to see action. Junior Trevor Holder and freshman Justin Grimm will start with Justin Earls, Joshua Fields, Steve Esmonde and Ryan Woolley appearing in relief.

On Thursday, the Southeastern Conference announced that Vanderbilt [5] was predicted to repeat as the 2008 SEC baseball champions, as voted by the league’s 12 baseball coaches. The Commodores, ranked as high as No. 3 nationally in the preseason polls, return eight position starters and four pitchers from their 2007 squad that earned the National No. 1 Seed in the NCAA Tournament but fell short in a bid to reach the College World Series. In addition to picking a preseason SEC champion, the league’s head coaches voted a predicted order of finish in the SEC Eastern and Western Divisions. In the East, Vanderbilt was the favorite followed by South Carolina [6], Kentucky [7], Georgia, Florida [8] and Tennessee [9]. Ole Miss was the favorite in the West followed by Mississippi State, Arkansas [10], Auburn [11], LSU [12] and Alabama [13]. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team.

In Baseball America’s SEC Preview released Thursday, Georgia was picked to finish third in the Eastern Division behind Vanderbilt and South Carolina. The Bulldogs were among eight SEC teams projected to make the NCAA Tournament. Georgia junior shortstop Gordon Beckham and senior closer Joshua Fields were named preseason All-SEC by the publication. Last Friday, Beckham was named a preseason first team All-American by Baseball America while Fields made the third team.
